Do you ever go back and think about how different your life would be if you had changed one thing?  Think about it.  Kind of like the “butterfly effect” you can envision your lifeline and see how one decision made, could have changed your whole life if you had taken control of that thing and made a change.

Here is what I’m talking about.  What if you never took that first drink of alcohol?  Do you think that maybe you wouldn’t have started doing all that partying and eating all that junk food the next day to overcome that awful hangover?

If you had avoided the drinking, you probably wouldn’t have eaten all those extra calories, gained all those unwanted pounds and you would have been in control of your life.  I really know how it is, believe me, you would make yourself a promise to get up the next morning and make sure you work out to burn off the calories you drank, and junk food you ate, but you didn’t feel well and that never happened.  Am I right?

To make matters worse, then you look at yourself in the mirror, and you just don’t like what you see.  The belly that’s no longer flat, maybe even sagging posture…because you just don’t feel good physically and you don’t feel good about yourself.

So now what?  Just keep doing what you’re doing and staying the way you are?  If that’s what you really want, that’s perfectly fine, it’s your life.  But if you want to just sit there drinking beers on the couch and telling your friends how you used to be in such great shape and now it’s just so much harder now, that’s not going to change anything.  YOU are the only one that can make your life the way you want it to be.  You CAN take charge of your life and make the changes that you really want.  It’s your life.

I can hear you saying, “Yea, right?  How do I do that?”  Well, let’s discuss the best way to do it.

You were put here to actually LIVE your life, not to just be a spectator.  Life is too short, so live it the way you were meant to.

With whatever weight loss goals you have in mind, you have to realize…you don’t just have a weight problem, you really have a problem controlling your life.  Let’s be honest here.  Answer a few questions about yourself, and be real about it:

  • Do you succumb to peer pressure from your friends?  Like doing things with them that you wouldn’t normally do without them?
  • Have you gotten into some pretty bad habits like smoking and drinking and doing drugs – along with poor living habits and eating habits?
  • Have you considered making changes, but then just went back to the same old way of life?

If you were honest and you answered yes to those questions, then it may be an eye-opener to you, but you have a problem taking control of your life.

Let’s delve a little further into this.  How do you feel about your body and the way your life is going right now?  If you really don’t like it at all, then you absolutely must make changes in your life and take control of it.  And how you go about doing that is you give up a bunch of things that are currently in your life.  Are you ready to do whatever it takes?

Let’s take a look at this from the point of view of why you are reading this – it’s about losing weight, right?

Say you hire a personal trainer.  Or, how about you buy that exciting set of DVDs that lead you in exercising all of the various body parts.  Hey – that’s great!  You would just have to be consistent and really make a commitment to use these tools.  So if you’re only going to give it half-an-effort then you probably just got yourself and expensive person to talk to or an expensive set of coasters for your coffee table.

So where does the “taking control of your life” come into play in all this?  Well, you need to fully commit to making the changes necessary, and that means doing things that are “uncomfortable” and may not sound desirable to you.  For instance, this means letting go of some old bad habits, and maybe even those friends who inadvertently sabotage your efforts and keep you from reaching your goals.

You’re probably hating what I’m saying right now, but really, I’m not asking you to anything except be completely honest with yourself and evaluate your actions.  Simply put – are your friends holding you back?  Try looking at it this way.  Say you hired a personal trainer and you see your trainer a few times per week, perhaps for an hour each session.  What are you doing with the rest of those some 160+ hours per week?  Television, internet, friends and a whole lot of other distractions can totally yank you away from your goals.  Are you truly ready to take over control of your life?

By controlling your own life, you, and you alone, have the power to decide what you allow into it.  You are the one who has to decide whether the people you’re hanging out with are helping you or holding you back.  If they are holding you back, maybe you need to reassess what role they really play in your life and spend more times with the people who can support you in achieving your goals, whether that’s to lose 10 lbs. or 100 lbs., or simply to have a healthier lifestyle.

You must believe that YOU make all of your own decisions.  It’s not t.v., social sites, friends or even family, it’s all you.  And YOU really can create the life you want, and the way you do that is by controlling it!
